'KaleidoSound: Time, Shape & Space Vol. 1' – f5point6 (SBA #014)

As 2020 draws to a close, R.Cleveland Aaron, otherwise known as f5point6, provides the fourteenth and final release of the year, surely the strangest in modern times, on See Blue Audio. It’s also the first instalment in a new series as ‘KaleidoSound: Time, Shape & Space’ takes over from ‘KaleidoSound: Time, Space & Frequencies’, which was an audio chronicle of the creation of Planet Earth and the fourth album from f5point6.

In fact, the stage was set for this new project with the closing track on ‘KaleidoSound: Time, Space & Frequencies Vol. 2’. With its crackle of static, glitchy machine noises, lo-fi effects and sombre tone, ‘[Outro – The Beginning and the End]’ does as the title suggests in changing the mood and providing the link as we move into another phase in the story of Planet Earth. ‘KaleidoSound: Time, Shape & Space Vol. 1’ explores the theme of architecture, starting with the architect that is nature. Architecture has also been one of main focuses of Cleveland’s photographic career, and, as this new release demonstrates across its ten tracks, nature is the supreme architect.

As well as drawing on the influences of architecture, the significance of numbers in nature is also a central theme throughout, and numbers often feature in the track titles. Through the study of numbers, a template to the organic nature of the world and its evolution can be constructed. Using this template, the opening track, ‘The Blueprint to Everything’, began its life as just a single sound on the sequencer. The raw, brooding energy of ‘[Outro – The Beginning and the End]’ continues its journey, but it also points to the new musical direction taken on ‘KaleidoSound: Time, Shape & Space Vol. 1’. This is cinematic ambience but of a darker hue as the influence of Detroit techno and overtones from the deeper side of jazz come to the fore.

Similarly, the closing track, ‘Where to Next’, poses the question of what happens with human evolution in the future. The universe may be infinite, but the blueprint is not, so the limitations facing humanity are our inability to decipher at what stage we stand in this process of evolution. It seems certain, however, that we have not reached the end point. With its spoken dialogues and slow-motion effects, there is a definite sense on ‘Where to Next’ that we are moving towards a strange new future.

In between these two, Cleveland explores the building blocks that represent the evolution of different species on Planet Earth. ‘CHNOPS – We Are Everything’, for example, represents the six elements present in all organic lifeforms: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulphur. ‘Tetrahedron of Forever’, meanwhile, is a collaboration with Versylen – young producer Elliot Ferguson – that began as two separate projects before they joined forces to create the final version. The result is a sonic interpretation of entering a prism; floating through timeless space until you reach its centre and are bathed in warm green light of Mother Nature.

All the music in this ten-track collection is suffused with the trademark f5point6 blend of ambient and beatless atmospherics, field recordings and found sounds, delicate melodies and glitchy rhythms, a nudge towards dubstep, and the warm glow of retro synths and analogue sounds. On ‘KaleidoSound: Time, Shape & Space Vol. 1’ this sound has morphed into something with more of an industrial, metallic edge. Drawing on science fiction, it is at times almost brutal, even dystopian, while at others it is infused with awe and wonder. As we remain under the shadow of COVID-19, this musical journey will continue in 2021.
